Getting Insurance in Mexico is identical to getting insurance in the United States.  You will want to find an agent or company that you can put your trust in.  Mexico Insurance is available through traditional brick and mortar offices or online.  Regardless of which you choose it is important to know the legal requirements of Mexico and understand what is and is not covered by your policy.

Mexico requires that you provide proof of financial responsibility (insurance) at the scene of an accident or in case you are pulled over.  Although some policies in the United States will cover you and your vehicle within a certain distance in Mexico, it is important to remember that Mexico does not recognize those policies as proof of financial responsibility.  You will need to get Mexico Insurance separately.  In Mexico it is important to remember that their legal system works a little different than the United States.  In Mexico you are guilty until proven innocent.  If you do not furnish proof of financial responsibility at the scene you will be hauled off to jail immediately.   So before planning your trip or move to Mexico, it is important to secure your insurance before leaving.  You will need insurance for not only your vehicle, but you your boat, RV and trailer as well.

Mexico has a minimum liability requirement of $20,000 USD for property damage and bodily injury combined.  To give an example of how that differs from the United States.  In the United States, every state carries its own laws and limits for automobile insurance.  For example, in the state of Arizona the property damage minimum requirement is $10,000.  For bodily injury, the state requires $15,000 per person per accident and $30,000 total for all bodily injury coverage.  In comparison, Mexico’s requirements are less.  But it is highly recommended for individuals who own property, businesses or have significant assets to get policies with higher coverage’s to protect themselves and their investments.

Mexico Insurance policies are available for weekends, weeks, months and by the year.  Depending on how long you will be in Mexico will determine which type of policy you will need.   In addition to the length of time you will need, it is important to review what will or won’t be covered by your policy.  Every company is different and has different prohibitions on their policies.  Make sure to obtain a copy of your policy and review the details before beginning your journey.   Also review the claims process and make sure you know what to do in the event of an accident.  Certain policies require that you file the claim in Mexico before returning to the United States and others require that you also repair your vehicle their as well.  Make sure you know what to do in the event of an accident.  This information can be found in your policy under insured’s responsibilities.

Driving into and around Mexico is much like preparing for your driver’s license in the United States.  Familiarize yourself with the laws of the road, make sure you have the right insurance policy and always practice safe driving habits.
